How humidifiers help

Humidifiers can be defined as those household appliances that are used to increase the moisture level or the humidity level in either a single room or the entire house. Varying types of humidifiers are present in the market ranging from point-of-use humidifiers used to moisten a single room to humidifiers for the entire house. These house humidifiers are connected to the homes' HVAC system and thus the entire house is humidified.

Common problems like cracked, itchy skin, dry nose and sore throats are visible when there is over dryness in the air. In addition to this, there is aggravation of asthma symptoms and other respiratory allergies due to the decreased levels of moisture in the air. But one should relax as help is there in the form of humidifiers that maintain a balance between the moisture and humidity levels.
Benefits of humidifiers

There are many benefits of the humidifiers and hence they should be considered necessary for every house. These benefits are:

1. Health: the instances and chances of upper respiratory problems are greatly reduced by the usage of humidifiers. Respiratory infections arise due to dryness of the air and when the humidifiers maintain this moisture level in the house, the chances of getting respiratory infections fall to a great extent. Humidifiers also help in the speedy recovery from the common cold.

2. Protection: dry air can lead to hardwood floors and walls losing their moisture content. This results in damaged and unsightly cracks. Dry air also has its adverse effects on furniture, electronics and pieces of art. Humidifiers can be helpful by providing the adequate amount of moisture content to the air in the house.

3. Comfort: the over-dryness of the air leads to loss of moisture content from the human body too. This leads to dry and itchy skin, dry nose and sore throat. Installation of humidifiers can help in alleviating these problems and providing comfort.

4. Energy saving: in cold winter months, thermostats of the heating systems are increased in order to keep the cold away. This leads to over-dryness and also affects the electricity bills. Humidifiers are again helpful as they tend to make one feel warmer even with low thermostat settings.

As per an estimate nearly 4% of the heating bill can be saved, if there is lowering of the thermostat by one degree.
Hence we see that the humidifiers have manifold benefits. Yet for them to work effectively, humidifiers must be cleaned periodically and the instructions provided by the manufacturers must be followed.

There are certain humidifiers that require little maintenance but there are chances of gathering dust, scaling and mineral deposits depending on the water source. Therefore it is advised to use water with a low mineral content. However if this is not possible, demineralization filters can be used.

Water in the humidifiers must be replaced periodically to eliminate the growth of bacteria. Also the filters must be changed as and when required. Keeping track of all these conditions would lead to better functioning of the humidifiers.
